Present. The Officer Administering the Government, The Colonial Secretary, Major Eaton (in the place of Major Hart- Synnot absent from the Colony) Lt.Colonel Chapman, the Hon. Mr.H.Keswick, Hon, Mr. E.Osborne, Hon.Mr.M.Stewart, Mr.H.W. Robertson, Mr. W.Dickson, Mr. R.Shewan, Mr.G.H.Medhurst, Mr. W..Humphreys and Mr.B.C.Wilks.

Mr.N.J.Stabb excused himself on the ground of pressure

of business.

The Officer Administering the Government informed the Committee that a certain measure of success had attended the appeal made to Employers of labour to encourage their employees to join the Volunteers, and to the general British public to come forward and volunteer. Mr.C.H.Ross, of the Firm of Jardine Matheson & Co. had succeeded in raising a Corps of 61 mounted and root sooute. This was a great source of satisfaction since Mr.C.H.Ross had earned the reputation of being a very efficient officer, who had worked the former Mounted Troop up to a state of efficiency which was made the subject comment by His Excellency the General Officer Commanding and other Military He felt Officers under whose observation of Troop had come. sure that in Mr. Ross' Corps the Volunteer Force would receive

a really useful and efficient addition.

the Government's request endeavoured to raise a Maxim Company drawn principally from Civil Servants, but had failed to obtain the necessary 25 recruite partly owing to the fact that some had joined Mr.Ross' Corps and partly because the Civil Service already contributed 42 Volunteers to the Volunteer

Corps.
